Aerogels have demonstrated significant results in several fields, including biomedicine. This review consolidates the recent progress on aerogel particle technology by providing, for the first time, a comprehensive and focused synthesis of the state-of-the-art of aerogel particle design specifically intended to enhance biocompatibility, stability, and targeted drug delivery. The review article includes the identification of critical aspects of various engineering methods used to control aerogel particle size, shape, and morphology, including surface modification and coating techniques. The review then delves into key results in the diverse biomedical applications of these aerogel particles reported so far, namely for oral, skin and pulmonary drug delivery. Finally, an insight on the perspectives, future trends and challenges in the aerogel particle engineering for biomedical uses are provided.
