CO2VID-4.0
New and green strategies for the sterilization of biomedical materials
The lack of a universal sterilization technique compatible with all types of biomedical materials is a special hurdle in the clinical practice. Even more important, there is currently no sterilization technique compatible with the reprocessing of many polymeric medical devices. As an alternative, scCO2 has been recognized as a sterilization agent that can inactivate the most resistant bacteria with the required sterilization levels.
Relevant advances on the knowledge of this sterilization technique were carried out in our previous project (RTI2018-094131-A-I00, under the acronym GREEN4AGEING) funded in the Retos Investigación-2018 call from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. These innovations were patented for medical devices and drug products and their valorization is proposed in CO2VID-4.0 project.
The main technological objective of CO2VID-4.0 project is to contribute to effective measures to face prophylactic interventions in a hospital environment through the development of a supercritical sterilization process. Based on the tested efficacy of the patented technology for the sterilization of medical devices and the advent of the digital health revolution, CO2VID-4.0 moves a stepforward to obtain a process fulfilling the hospital premises needs for medical devices and drug products. The process will be tested for a portfolio of clinically relevant medical devices and drug products.
The IP protection strategy and technology transfer activities foreseen within the project will contribute to move from a TRL-5 level to a TRL-6 level, technology transfer and commercialization. Plans for dissemination to a wide audience are envisaged based on activities among business experts, industry, physicians, physician and patient associations, the scientific community, and the general public.
CO2VID-4.0 is funded under the project with reference PDC2022-133526-I00 by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by the European Union Next GenerationEU/PRTR.
What we do
Within the framework of ECOBONE project, technical validations of products and production will be carried out and a commercialization strategy will be implemented for the licensing of the scaffold production technology.
Technology transfer
To implement a robust IP strategy.
To establish a commercialization strategy and to search for potential partners/licensees.
Advanced materials
Technical validation of two bone scaffold formats with natural bone-mimicking morphological and mechanical properties and endowed with bone regeneration properties
Green technology
Validation of a proprietary technology especially adapted to the specific demands of the project
